One of the most common questions we receive is: when should I come? The answer depends entirely on what you are looking for — because each season in the Montenegrin highlands offers something completely different, and each one is worth experiencing.

Summer (June – September) — Peak Season

This is when the highlands are fully alive. The katuns are occupied, the meadows are carpeted with wildflowers, and the days are long enough to attempt serious summit treks. Temperatures at altitude stay cool even in August — typically 15–22°C during the day — while the lowlands swelter.

  • All tours fully operational, including multi-day treks
  • Katun visits possible — families in residence, cheese available
  • Wildflower meadows at peak bloom in June–July
  • Tara River at good level for swimming and canyon walks
  • Longest daylight hours — summit treks feasible
Best for

First-time visitors, families, trekking, katun culture, wildflower photography. Book accommodation 2–3 months ahead for July–August.

Autumn (October – November) — Hidden Gem

Locals will tell you that October is their favourite month in the mountains, and they are right. The tourist crowds are gone entirely. The forests turn amber and gold in ways that seem almost theatrical. The air is sharp and clear, giving the best visibility of the year — on a good October day you can see ranges hundreds of kilometres away.

The katuns are closed for the season, but the highland trails remain walkable through most of October. The cabin is warm with the stove lit, and evenings feel like evenings are supposed to feel.

Best for

Photography, solitude seekers, couples. Prices typically 20–30% lower than peak season. Weather can change quickly — always carry rain gear.

Winter (December – March) — Silence & Snow

Winter in the highlands is not for everyone. Access to higher elevations becomes difficult or impossible without proper equipment. But for those willing to make the effort, the reward is a landscape of absolute, uncompromising silence — snow-covered peaks, frozen meadows, smoke rising from the only lit cabin for kilometres in any direction.

Snowshoeing and cross-country skiing are possible around Žabljak and the Durmitor plateau. The village life tour remains available year-round, bringing you into homes that are especially warm and welcoming when the weather outside is hostile.

Spring (April – May) — The Awakening

Spring in the mountains arrives later than you might expect. At higher elevations, snow can persist well into May. But the transition is extraordinary — you can watch the snowmelt happen in real time, rivers running full and fast with glacial water, the first green pushing through soil that was frozen solid two weeks before.

Waterfall in spring Montenegro

Spring is also the best time to see waterfalls at full force and rivers running turquoise with snowmelt. The Tara canyon in April is a different creature from the Tara in August.

Our recommendation

If you can only come once, come in late June or early September — you get the warmth of summer, the light is extraordinary, and the crowds of peak July–August are either not yet there or already gone.
