A small estate, on one slow mountain, quietly built up by hand.

Three buildings, one kitchen, one fire and a few good trails — that’s the whole place. The estate is small on purpose. We never wanted to be a hotel; we wanted somewhere quiet enough that a stranger can land here on a Tuesday and feel at home by Wednesday lunch.

High above the valleys and paved roads, where the forests of Bjelasica open into endless alpine pastures, stand the katun settlements. For centuries they have followed the rhythm of nature — not the calendar. They are not just places. They are a way of life that is slowly disappearing.

A life that begins with sunrise

At the katun, the day starts early. Before the mountain fully wakes, the sound of bells and footsteps on dew-covered grass fills the air. Milk is hand-milked, often outdoors, and then turned into cheese, cream and dairy that carry the true taste of the mountain.

Guardians of silence

The shepherds of Bjelasica are among the last guardians of a world slowly fading away. Young people rarely stay; the older generation gradually closes their wooden huts. What remains is the silence of the mountain — and traces of a life that has lasted far longer than the modern world around it.

Cheese, fire, and stories

At the katun, food is never rushed — it is shared. Cheese is cut thick, bread is homemade, milk is fresh from the morning. Around the fire there is not much talking; but when people do speak, they talk about time, livestock, snow and the people who came up and stayed longer than they planned.

As long as there are people who come up to hear the silence, taste the cheese and sit with the shepherds, the katuns of Bjelasica will not be completely lost. They will simply become quieter.
